Demdike was the supposed ringleader of the infamous Pendle Witches of the 1600’s and seems a fitting reference to the unsettling undercurrents threaded through this Manchester duo’s productions.
Miles Whittaker also produces techno as MLZ, collaborates with Andy Stott in Millie & Andrea and more whilst Sean Canty is a key member of the great Finders Keepers label, their musical union fittingly merging grinding beats, disorientating drones and hallucinatory folk memory. Later releases, particularly their magical Test Pressing 12” series, brought a gloriously caustic metallic jungle edge to their music and has been described as owing as much to Source Direct as to Alice Coltrane and 2016’s Wonderland album was another classy instalment.
Demdike Stare tick so many boxes for the lover of adventurous production. Their music draws on imagined film themes, huge ominous drones, subtly engineered breaks and glorious sampladelia and can fly between impending low-end doom and dancefloor catharsis.
Demdike Stare are in demand. From live-scoring films for the BFI to more commercial soundtrack work in Hollywood, from their ‘Concealed’ productions with Krakow’s Sinfonietta Cracovia and video artist Michael England, to the esoteric selections of their all-night DJ sessions, and searing late night club sets anyone lucky enough to have seen them play will no doubt have imprinted on their minds.
