You’ll know, of course, that This Heat were a human bridge between multiple genres and attitudes – that they were simultaneously prog, punk, tape artists, dub engineers, industrialists, krautrockers. They had the urgency of punk and the invention of using tape loops live on stage, remixing themselves in real time, being as inspired by Can as by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. And they made a glorious, funked-up cacophony that, like all greats, has a resonating influence that has emanated from the odorous punk pubs of late 70’s London and across the consciousness of so many contemporary musical adventurers today. So much better known now than when they existed, as the Out Of Cold Storage box set that appeared in 2006 and the 2016 vinyl reissues of all their albums testifies.

This Is Not This Heat is not This Heat. Sadly Gareth Williams passed away in 2001, but remaining members Charles Hayward and Charles Bullen decided recently to have some fun with the This Heat legend and invite a series of special guests to help them recreate the magic of the trio live. Numerous shows were booked through 2016 following a triumphant/wild night at London’s Café Oto, then Charles Bullen broke his ankle and all was put on hold. So the live shows were postponed until 2017 and we’re so excited to bring them to Safe As Milk – we don’t know who their special guests will be yet though we know names such as Thurston Moore, Alexis Taylor, John Edwards and others have been mentioned. And we’re also told that following this series of live blowouts through 2017, the This Heat legend as a live concept will be laid to rest for eternity, so you really don’t want to miss this little piece of history.
